Properties of Water
- Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen
- An atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains its properties
- Atoms consist of Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons (Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge, and neutrons are neutrally charged
- When H2 and O atoms combine to form a water molecule, each H shares its single electron with the O and the O shares one of its electrons with H
Water is a Polar Molecule
Shared electrons spend more time around the O than the H and the H end caries a slightly positive charge ( polar molecule) and the O carries a slightly negative charge.
Hydrogen Bonding : the weak attraction between the weakly positive hydrogen atoms and the weakly negative oxygen atoms of a different molecule.
